Micro-focus Option

The micro-focus beam will be generated by use of beryllium refractive lenses.

The project aims for a special resolution of less than 10 microns in the horizontal direction of the beam profile. Therefore, it will be possible to scan heterogeneous samples. Due to a gain of photons per unit area it is foreseen that the conditions can be optimized for weak scatterers.

Parabolic refractive beryllium lenses are proposed as optical elements. These lenses will focus the beam by imaging the source onto the sample as is schematically shown in the figure below.

The lenses are chromatic. They are expected to perform at a photon energy of 10 keV for two different micro-focus setups. In each case there will be an assembly of 35 parabolic refractive lenses used.

In the table below we show the current design parameters for the two options and the expected gain from each.

The optical layout for the micro-focus option is adapted to comply with the Technical Specifications set out for BL11 (see Conceptual Dasign 2006).

The commissioning of these setups are expected to start in the second part of 2011.
