A new European-funded project starting today will enable greater cooperation between SMEs and research centres in the Spain-France border regions. Coordinated by the Basque company BihurCrystal, ALBA industrial office and BOREAS beamline are taking part in the project.

Cerdanyola del Vallès, 1st February 2018. The Interreg POCTEFA European Programme has awarded a grant of 1.2 Million Euro, from the European Regional Development Funds (ERDF), to the project EFA194/16 entitled "Trans-Pyrenean Node for Scientific Instrumentation" (TNSI), whose total cost is 1.9 Million Euro. The project is aiming to put together SMEs and research centers in the border regions of Spain and France to promote cooperation in R&D&I and technology transfer. The project creates a Technological Node focused in Nanotechnologies, Advanced Materials and Advanced Manufacturing, which are part of Key Enabling Technologies (KET). Three key activities are developed:

  1. Pre-competitive research: SMEs and research centres collaborate in the study of key technologies, exploring both their technical and economic potential.
  2. Fundamental research: Products developed by SMEs are integrated into research projects, to identify improvements that allow new markets to be addressed.
  3. Training: A two-way program between SME staff and young researchers improves their training and facilitates academic / business transition.

These actions are reinforced with an intense programme of communication and dissemination, which includes several specialized meetings and a summer school.

TNSI is coordinated by BIHURCRYSTAL and is regrouping 5 research institutes, 3 SME, 1 university and 1 large facility, with the following regional distribution: In Catalonia, the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB, CSIC), the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) and the ALBA Synchrotron (managed by CELLS). In Aragon, the Institute of Material Sciences of Aragon (ICMA, CSIC), the University of Zaragoza (UNIZAR), and GraPhene NanoTech (GPNT, SME). In the Basque Country, BIHURCRYSTAL (SME), and the Centre of Materials Physics (CFM, CSIC). In Haute-Garonne, CEMES (CNRS). In Hautes-Pyrenées, ISP-SYSTEM (SME).

The project has been 65% cofinanced by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Interreg V-A Spain-France-Andorra programme (POCTEFA 2014-2020). POCTEFA aims to reinforce the economic and social integration of the French–Spanish–Andorran border. Its support is focused on developing economic, social and environmental cross-border activities through joint strategies favouring sustainable territorial development.
