Abstract

Light allows us to understand, know and appreciate the beauty of the objects around us. There is more hidden beauties and properties of matter that cannot be known without special technologies. One of these is synchrotron light. The light that very energetic electrons emit when their trajectory curves is used to inquire into the details of matter hidden not only in human view but also in other research methods.

At ALBA Synchrotron, accelerated electrons produce the synchrotron light that is channeled into special laboratories positioned around the accelerator. In these laboratories, thousands of researchers analyze each year, thanks to the interaction of this light with matter, the properties of infinity of samples. The information they collect serves to understand biological systems, to develop new materials and drugs, to define catalysis processes, to understand the origin and processes of degeneration of artistic heritage, in short, to advance knowledge of the subject, putting it at the service of society and helping to create a more sustainable world.
