From 20th to 24th March the ALBA Synchrotron hosted the European course HERCULES, where 20 young researchers from all over the world learned about synchrotron light science with the help of ALBA scientists. During the week, ALBA staff provided training for these students in a practical way about cutting-edge techniques with synchrotron radiation, with applications in fields such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Hard & Soft Condensed Matter.

Cerdanyola del Vallès, 3rd April 2023   HERCULES School is a 5-week course coordinated by the Université Grenoble Alpes dedicated to neutron and synchrotron radiation, aimed to provide training for the future researchers. During one week, participants have the opportunity to travel to one of the facilities taking part in the project. One of them is the ALBA Synchrotron.

From 20th to 24th March, 20 young scientists came to ALBA to learn first-hand the synchrotron light techniques and their underlying potential to present and future research they might perform. At their stay at ALBA, participants did hands-on practices at the beamlines with the help of staff from the Experiments Division and learned from each other. "HERCULES school 2023 finished with a great success. We are getting a really positive feedback from the students", comments Eduardo Solano, one of the organizers of the school at ALBA.

In particular, practical sessions were carried out at the beamlines NCD-SWEET, BOREAS and CLAESS, for the Physics and Chemistry of Condensed Matter group, and at MIRAS, MISTRAL, XALOC and XAIRA for the Biomolecular Structure and Dynamics group. That way, students from HERCULES school experienced the transversal utility of synchrotron light and learned from professionals from different science fields. "Hopefully we will see some of the students as users, collaborators or even colleagues in the future", adds Alessandre Patera, also responsible of the organization of the school at ALBA.

ALBA has a great commitment towards education and academic support to all educational levels. Giving support to HERCULES School allows to achieve these objectives, due to its transversal programme and highly qualified professionals taking part in it.
