Unofficial QtiPlot packages for windows

Introduction

This page is devoted to make Unofficial Builds of Qtiplot for windows available to everyone for free.
QtiPlot is an open source alternative to Origin and other similar scientific data analysis and plotting programs.

Qtiplot has been written by Ion Vasilef and other collaborators. Check the Official QtiPlot web page for more information:

A note on releases of newer versions (>0.9.8.3):

Every time a new official QtiPlot version is released, I get emails from people asking whether I plan to make an unofficial release as well. So I guess it is worth answering here:

  • My plan is to make roughly 2 releases per year. My last release was done early in 2011but sometimes I cannot find the time for doing them. Since S.Z. is doing such a nice work in compiling QtiPlot as well, I will also link to his releases in this page.
  • The main issue is that since version 0.9.8.4, the author of QtiPlot decided to move certain features of QtiPlot to what he calls a "plug-in" system and he does not distribute the code for those plug-ins (the legality of this should be looked at carefully). As a result, it may happen that future unofficial builds of versions >=0.9.8.4 may lack some features. I haven't tried myself yet, but I got some reports of other people trying to get a full-featured build without success. However, S.Z has managed to port the EMF export and Origin import support from version 0.9.8.3 to the latest versions.
  • Of course, I will be very happy in hearing from other people's experiences in this regard.

For using QtiPlot on a windows machine, simply download the package from the following list, unzip it in your directory of choice and execute QtiPlot.exe.

The following features from QtiPlot v0.9.8.9 are not enabled in this build:
  • Import from spreadsheets
Python scripting is supported, but you must have Python2.7 already installed in your machine. You may also need to change the location of the  "Python Configuration File"  (qtiplotrc.py) in QtiPlot's preferences dialog.

(1): These builds can be legally installed in as many machines as wanted, They can also be redistributed under the terms of the GPLv2 license.

(2): The source code provided here contains the modifications I had to do in order to build the corresponding binaries. They may also contain some 3rd parties software.

(3): Some optional features may not be available in some builds. The reason is that I ran into some kind trouble for compiling them and I did not have time/motivation to investigate further. If you are interested in getting those features, you can try to enable them by compiling qtiplot yourself (and if you succeed, please tell me how you did it!),  or use the official binaries

(4): I cannot offer any guaranty for any build contributed by a third person (as a matter of fact, I do not offer any guaranty on my own builds), but at least I checked that all the binaries in this table worked for me and, to my best knowledge, they are free of malware (scanned with clamav on the release date).

 

 

Other sources of binaries

  • Some GNU/Linux distributions provide QtiPlot in their official repositories (e.g., Debian and Ubuntu). Moreover, in distributions that do not provide it officially, it is in many cases easy to find packages contributed by the community.
  • ATG provides (somewhat outdated) QtiPlot binaries for MacOSX free of charge: http://naranja.umh.es/~atg/software-qt4.html
  • In 2007 a project called SciDavis was started as a fork of QtiPlot. While SciDavis shares many of the characteristics of QtiPlot, it does not try to mimic Origin's interface (whether this is advantage or a disadvantage depends on the user). SciDavis provides unrestricted access to binaries for Linux, Windows and MacOSX:  http://scidavis.sourceforge.net/

 

Why using unofficial QtiPlot builds?

The reason for creating this web page is that, although the Qtiplot program is Free Software under the GPLv2 license, its author does not provide binaries (the executable program) for free (the license only requires him to provide the sources). The author provides demo versions for free, but he charges users if they want the full-featured binaries.
Therefore, in order to use QtiPlot, your options are:

a) Use any of the GNU/Linux distributions that include their own builds of Qtiplot (e.g. Debian or Ubuntu)

b) Buy a maintenance contract from Ion Vasilief.

c) Compile the program yourself from the GPL'ed sources.

d) Get the program from someone else who already compiled it (the GPL grants redistribution rights).

I personally prefer "a)", and I would recommend "b)" in many situations. But, there are some cases in which "b)" is not possible. The "c)" option (compile-it-yourself) is obviously not for everybody. This leaves some people with "d)" as the only choice. This is what this web page is for.


Why using official QtiPlot builds?

Or, in other words... why would anyone want option "b)" if there is an option "d)"?

1) Because you may want to help Qtiplot development.

2) Because you may want to have support from Ion Vasilef.

3) Because you may want to have the most up-to-date binary with a nice installer.
