LEAPS – the League of European Accelerator-based Photon Sources (https://leaps-initiative.eu)– is a strategic research consortium representing thirteen Synchrotron (SR) and six Free Electron Laser (FEL) Research Infrastructures (RIs) in Europe. Its primary goal is to guarantee and promote quality as well as impact of fundamental, applied and industrial research to the benefit of the European science and of the whole society.

In this event LEAPS will present the European Strategy for Accelerator-based Photon Sources 2022-ESAPS 2022 which consists in a new RI strategy document which will enable Europe to cope with the grand challenges and which should be integrated in the new European Research Area to help making it both a reality and a success.

The LEAPS consortium, together with its user community, defined several research focal areas for the future, from discovery of new materials for circular economy to biomedicine, aiming at improving the technical capabilities of the facilities to comply with the future needs of European researchers from academy and industry. These improvements are twofold, upgrade of the RIs landscape with revolutionary technologies towards technological sovereignty in Europe and, the development of key enabling technologies to tackle new challenges. The upgrade plans envision - against the background of climate change - to dramatically reduce facilities electric power consumption and diminish the environmental footprint.

LEAPS is also largely engaging with the current and potential user communities having an integrative role for countries with less developed communities and infrastructures for research and innovation to discuss, anticipate and meet their needs and future challenges.

The event will give a glimpse of a working ecosystem for RIs, in which the Member States and facilities for RI have a more prominent role and how this model can work together for the benefit of researchers and innovators across all Europe.
