ALBA Synchrotron
As a general rule, experiments carried out with the STM system must be performed exclusively using samples, tip materials, and experimental configurations previously described in the corresponding proposals (academic, in-house, or proprietary) and validated by the ALBA Health and Safety Office. All procedures must comply with UHV operational protocols, including proper sample preparation, contamination control, and safe handling of high voltage, vacuum systems, and associated instrumentation.
Low-risk experiments: All experiments are conducted under UHV inside the chamber.
Appropriate PPE must be worn when handling samples and operating the UHV system:
- Gloves (nitrile / UHV-compatible), Safety goggles.
- Thermal protection (during bake-out or handling hot components).
- Antistatic wrist strap (for sensitive electronics handling).
- Face shield (when working with pressurized gases or potential splashes).
- Respiratory protection (if required during venting or gas handling procedures).
- Hearing protection (if working near pumps or high-noise equipment).
UHV Protocols (Ultra-High Vacuum):
- Equipment operation and handling, Bake-out and Degassing.
Interlocks for valves closure in case of power loss, pumps shutdown or electrical failure.
