Experiments and demonstrations

  • The Lorentz Force. With a small electron accelerator, we can see and explain how the ALBA Synchrotron works and why the beam can be bent with magnets.
  • Vacuum and cryogenics, two essential allies at ALBA. On a stage, experiments will alternate with liquid nitrogen and balloons and with an ultra-high vacuum bell and sweets.
  • The diffraction technique at ALBA. We teach how to read and interpret different diffraction patterns, showing how data on the structure of various materials is obtained.
  • Extract your DNA. Following the instructions of our staff, you will be able to extract your own DNA and better understand how we study biological samples at ALBA.
  • Hydraulic robot. See with your own hands if you are able to move objects with the hydraulic robot arm, just as our robots do to place samples on much smaller scales.

Ratón Pérez's milk tooth collection campaign

In collaboration with the National Center for Research on Human Evolution (CENIEH, Burgos).

In 2014, the Dental Anthropology Group at the CENIEH (National Center for Dental Anthropology) began a campaign to collect baby teeth with the goal of creating a catalog for various studies on dental variability, morphological characterization, and histological development in modern human populations. More details about the group's activities can be found here.

Once again, during the ALBA Open Day, teeth will be collected from all those who physically bring theirs. Ratón Pérez is generous and, in addition to a certificate certifying their collaboration in the research, will give all donors a small gift. The teeth will be sent to the center in Burgos, where they will be scanned and classified for later use in research.
