In the last ten years, the ALBA (the synchrotron light source on the outskirts of Barcelona) has become an important pillar of Spanish and European research, providing first-line instrumentation to more than six thousand academic and industrial users. With its ten operational experimental lines of light—and while four more are being built and an electronic microscopy center is being set up—it is an essential tool for tackling the most pressing challenges of society. Synchrotron light is used to analyze and understand the properties of matter in countless fields: from understanding disease mechanisms to aid in the development of drugs and vaccines, from catalytic research to the development of materials for energy production and storage, from environmental research to communication technologies. On the other hand, its industrial program has a direct impact on economic growth, as it offers a window of innovation opportunities to a variety of companies.
Furthermore, ALBA plays an important role in the scientific and technological training of young people and in the education of the whole society on the need to enhance the country's research capacities.
Today, the ALBA is in the process of being renovated to make the leap to the fourth generation: the ALBA II, a project that is only just beginning and running in parallel with the full operation of the current infrastructure. ALBA II will be operational for the 1930s and will continue to provide answers to the growing challenges of the 21st century in the fields of the environment, energy, the economy and health.
