Advanced nanoporous materials for innovative applications: from mesoporous oxide-diluted magnetic semiconductors to 3D arrays of quantum antidots

Much progress has been made during the last years in the synthetic pathways to prepare nanoporous frameworks with precise control of the degree of porosity, pore size and crystallinity of the pore walls. This development has been prompted by the widespread utilization of these materials in areas like catalysis, gas-sensing or electrochemical energy storage, where a high surface area-to-volume ratio favours an enhanced performance. To trigger new functionalities of nanoporous materials, it is often necessary to develop new types of frameworks that include more than one phase in their porous structure (e.g., ferromagnetic-photoluminescent composites, two-phase ferrimagnetic-antiferromagnetic oxides, porous core-shell metal-semiconductor composites, etc.) or to physically or chemically dope the pristine nanoporous structure with specific cations or secondary metal species.
