You are here: Home / MEDIA / NEWS / COUNT DOWN FOR HERCULES SCHOOL 2023
HERCULES EUROPEAN SCHOOL is a five week course that provides training for scientists in the field of Neutrons, X-ray Synchrotron Radiation, and Free Electron Laser for condensed matter studies. The programme includes lectures, practicals, tutorials, and a one-week stay in a Large European Facility. The ALBA Synchrotron is one of the HERCULES’ partner institutions that will host the students for their training.

HERCULES 2023-2

Cerdanyola del Vallès, 27 September 2022. Registration is already open for the HERCULES European School coordinated by the Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA), which will take place from 27 February to 31 March 2023. It is a course for Ph.D. students and young researchers using Neutrons and Synchrotron Radiation for applications in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Hard & Soft Condensed Matter.

The 5-week school includes lectures, hands-on practicals, labs & tutorials, visits, a poster session, group work sessions, and many other activities. Participants will spend one week in a partner institution in Europe, among them, the ALBA Synchrotron.

Students will be able to learn new techniques using neutron and synchrotron radiation; expand their theoretical and practical knowledge, not only for their present research but also for their scientific careers. They will have the opportunity to experiment with these techniques on world-class instruments & beamlines

Moreover, participants will build a network of relations with fellow young researchers and experienced teachers from all over the world.

For the first time this year, the school will be held in a hybrid format. Thus, part-time online participation is also possible, consisting only in following online the lectures held in Grenoble.

For those students staying at ALBA, the first day will consist of several conferences describing in detail the ALBA Synchrotron and some of its available techniques and will finish with a guided tour of the facility. On the following days, students will split into two groups for the practical sessions. The Physics and Chemistry of condensed matter group will learn in detail about NCD-SWEET, BOREAS, and CLAESS beamlines, while the Biomolecular structure and dynamics group will be trained by MIRAS, MISTRAL, XALOC and XAIRA staff.

The deadline for applications is 15 October 2022. To learn more details, check the official website: https://hercules-school.eu

With the collaboration of Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología. The ALBA Synchrotron is part of the of the Unidades de Cultura Científica y de la Innovación (UCC+i) of the FECYT and has received support through the FCT-21-17088 project.
