Within the series of outreach videos developed in collaboration with FECYT, the ALBA Synchrotron has released two videos explaining experiments aimed at understanding the behavior of the virus that causes Covid-19 as well as possible treatments.

Cerdanyola del Vallès, 17th June 2022. One of the application areas of synchrotron light is life sciences. By using it, proteins, cells and other tissues can be observed, as well as the effect of compounds or drugs.

The ALBA Synchrotron has launched a series of five outreach videos aimed at showing some of the experiments carried out at its facilities. Research teams explain the contribution of synchrotron light and the benefits they have obtained from it.

In particular, we explain two different examples of experiments performed at ALBA. At the MISTRAL beamline, a study led by the scientist Ana Joaquina Pérez from the ALBA Synchrotron and Pablo Gastaminza, from the National Biotechnology Center (CNB-CSIC), has analyzed the causes  and effects of SARS-CoV2 in the cells it infects.

The team led by Fernando Díaz of the Margarita Salas Biological Research Center (CIB Margarita Salas - CSIC) has tested the efficacy of drugs, called MTA, which can inhibit SARS-CoV2 infection. To do so, they have performed analyses on the XALOC and NCD-SWEET beamlines.

These videos are part of the outreach project FCT-20-15798, co-funded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) - Ministry of Science and Innovation.
