Abstract

The development of high performance photocathodes is a key challenge for next generation accelerated-based light sources such as high repetition rate Free Electron Laser (FEL), energy recovery linac (ERL), and additionally of systems designed for ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) and dynamic transmission electron microscopy (DTEM). Among various photocathodes such as traditional metal photocathodes, plasmon-enhanced photocathodes, and surface-state emitted electron cathodes, etc., thesynthetic alkali antimonide photocathodes have shown great promise for the next generation light source application because of their high quantum efficiency (QE), low thermal emittance, fast response time and response in the visible light wavelength range. I will talk about the photo-cathode project at the Advanced Light source for APEX photo-injector. We have developed a wavelength tunable UV high brightness light source for driving the photocathode and a new method to quickly measure the emittance in the lab. We measured a thermal emittance of 0.23um/mm from Sb cathode at room temperature. We have successfully developed a triple element co-deposition method to fabricate bi-alkali photocathode and we have routinely provided photocathode for APEX photo-injector.
