What is your job at ALBA?
I’m a Radiation Protection Higher Technician for the Radiation Protection Service. We are in charge of the protection of workers concerning radiation risk.
My job involves the shielding design of the new beamlines and implementations of the radiological safety requirements to manage the risk associated with new facilities in ALBA, the radiation monitoring of exposed workers, periodic verification of radiation detectors and quality control of shielding and interlocking systems. We are also in close communication with the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN).
It’s not a monotonous job at all, each day is different.
What do you enjoy the most about your job at ALBA?
The working atmosphere is amazing, I love the fact that everyone is going in the same direction, with a clear goal. I also enjoy the possibility to work with people from different professional fields and divisions.
Thanks to the high level of the professionals working here and to the projects I am involved in, I am learning all the time (one of the things I like more in life).
Any exciting projects you are involved in?
Currently, the most challenging project we have is the design of the new beamline FAXTOR. This is the first time I’ve participated in the design of a beamline. I specifically collaborate in the shielding design and I loved it. It’s not just a one-person job, we had to work closely as a team, which I really enjoyed.
Any differences with previous jobs?
I used to work at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. I was a beamline scientist and researcher in the external beamline of the particle accelerator at the CMAM-UAM. My research was related to cultural heritage and proton therapy for oncology. I was also in charge of the radiation protection of the facility.
Now, although I don’t do research anymore, I keep doing what I like, working in radiation protection.
What was your perception of ALBA before working for it?
I’ve always thought of ALBA as a wonderful place to work in. And now that I am here, it has fulfilled my expectations. The dynamic work, the energy, the positivity which breaths in here…
And from the social point of view, I found many very friendly colleagues eager to make me felt part of this family.
Which are your hobbies?
I really like sports: before moving to Barcelona I played volleyball at college (UAM) and in the Senior Madrid’s league (Juegos Municipales), I also like trekking and recently I have started climbing. I often go to the cinema, I like to read, I enjoy having a drink on a terrace… I love dogs, I adopted my dog Trosky a year ago, he also likes trekking!
