The lecture will cover the

history and the understanding of light across the last 25 centuries

with a focus on the discovery of the synchrotron radiation.

It will particularly introduce the contributions of Maxwell's and Faraday's to the field complemented with a few examples of applications of synchrotron light in the research nowadays.

Finally a brief description of 4th generation sources will be presented.
