The need for a neutron source of high intensity and energies in the order of 14 MeV for the qualification of materials in an environment similar to that of a fusion reactor has been identified in the European Fusion Program as a necessary step for the design and licensing of the future Demonstration Reactor (DEMO). This need has driven at European level the development of one of a Source based on the reaction Li (d, nx) called DONES (DEMO Oriented Neutron Source) with a very significant Spanish participation. Recently, Granada has been identified as the European headquarters of reference in the event that this facility is finally built in Europe.
In this presentation the justification of the project, the current state of its development and future perspectives will be discussed, also emphasizing other possible scientific-technological applications.
