ALBA Synchrotron

On November 16, 2024, the ALBA Synchrotron opened again its doors to the public to explain how our complex of particle accelerators works and to showcase the science done at our facilities with our cutting-edge instrumentation.
The 10th edition of this well-known outreach event followed the path of previous events and offered to more than 2,000 visitors the opportunity to make a free tour around the building to know in detail how the facility works.
The event, that took place from 9:00 until 19:00h, included explanations from scientists and technicians as well as presentations, demonstrations and hands-on activities in different topics related to synchrotron areas like diffraction technique, vacuum, cryogenics or the study of steel with synchrotron light. In particular, younger visitors and their families were welcomed with a dedicated area and activities for them, designed to spark their interest in science and technology. In particular, two new activities attracted the interest of the participants: the DNA extraction and the Steel section, where kids could emulate synchrotron light steel experiments by using play dough.
The event’s success was powered by the commitment of more than 138 volunteers, staff and students, who were essential during the day making science closer to everyone.
ALBA extends its gratitude to everyone who participated in the ALBA Open Day. The event’s resounding success reflects the growing public interest in science and technology, and ALBA looks forward to welcoming even more visitors in next edition on May 24, 2025.
