The user community of the ALBA Synchrotron was called to participate in a webinar session the last 30th of June. Users were able to learn about the status of the ALBA II project and how to contribute to its success. A call for new beamlines is now open. Proposals can be send until 6th of September 2021.

On the 30th of June, it was held the ALBA II Day webinar. The event was divided in three sessions. The first one, with more than 260 participants, was dedicated to giving an overview on the user perspectives, strategy and mission for academic and industrial communities, the future of the accelerator, the beamlines, and the partnership strategy for ALBA II.

The second session was focused on the main strategy fields for the future facility: Health, Information Technology, and Materials & Energy. After a short introduction to each of them, a breakout session for each topic was opened so attendees could further discuss them.

Finally, the closing session covered a summary of each of the breakout sessions and the conclusions and closing remarks. A new call for beamline concept proposals was presented.

Call for new beamlines

The decision on the characteristics of future beamlines and services is crucial to determine ALBA II's success, and here ALBA is asking for the participation of the ALBA user community to send proposals for new beamlines.

This is a first step to produce a variety of pre-proposals which form a pool of ideas from which a limited number will be encouraged to be developed to a full proposal. Depending on the funding possibilities, the final decision for one or two new beamlines will take place in early 2022. The remaining pool may be used later in the process to select additional instruments or motivate major upgrades of existing beamlines. The deadline for pre-proposal submission is the 6th of September 2021.
