On the 12th of May the ALBA Synchrotron is hosting an industrial workshop to share the applications of synchrotron light in the process of improving agri-food, food and packaging. During the event, the capabilities of the synchrotron-based techniques as well as case studies conducted at ALBA will be presented. A visit to the facility is also included. Free registration is open till the 10th of May.

Food industry in Spain is the first industrial sector of the country, with 20,5% of the products' sales and 18,3% of the employed people. About 29,000 companies work in this area, representing 1,9% of Spanish GPD, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment of the Spanish government. Keeping a good level of research and development is a must to guarantee the competitiveness of the sector, making companies to optimise and improve the products for satisfying the consumers' growing needs from the healthy, nutritional and taste points of view. Synchrotron light is a great tool for characterising food at the micro and nanoscale, enabling to understand and improve food production and packaging processes.

The ALBA Synchrotron organises an industrial workshop aimed, in this occasion, at the food and packaging sector. In the event, case studies conducted in ALBA will be presented by company Henkel about packaging, Universitat de Barcelona about lipids and fats and Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona about functional foods and traceability. Due to the international relevance of the sector, the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) is also taking part and it is worth-mentioning that the European project NFFA is funding the event. The attendees will also have the opportunity to vista ALBA's facilities.

The event is addressed to R+D+i responsible and members of food and packaging companies of these sectors, willing to broaden their knowledge about the available techniques for improving the properties, quality and manufacturing process of these products.
