ALBA Synchrotron
The 1st June, the Industrial office organised a workshop addressed to companies from the metallurgy and surfaces treatment sectors. More than 50 participants had the opportunity to see the applications of the synchrotron techniques on this sector as well as the visit to ALBA's facilities.
Cerdanyola del Vallès, 21st June 2018.
The event was held in collaboration with Federació Empresarial del Metall (association that gathers more than 3.100 metallurgy companies and more than 35.000 workers) and the European project CALIPSOplus. The metallurgy sector concerns the materials science and the technology of metals, the processing, product building and industrial exploitation of metals. It is the core activity underpinning primary metals production, alloying and processing, production and material flow (e.g.: reuse and recycling). These activities account for 46% of the total manufacturing value and 11% of the total gross domestic product (GDP) in the European Union.
The event started with Caterina Biscari, director of the ALBA Synchrotron, and Carlos Garriga Sels, President of the Federació Empresarial del Metall, welcoming all the attendees and encouraging them to take profit of the synchrotron techniques available at ALBA. Later on, Miguel Ángel García Aranda, Scientific Director of ALBA and Alejandro Sánchez, Director of the Industrial and Projects office explained the functioning of the ALBA Synchrotron and its techniques for the analysis of materials and how companies can interact with ALBA to obtain services related to materials characterization. After these introductory talks, different presentations by scientists of ALBA showed to the attendees the different application of its cutting-edge techniques for the characterization of the oxidation of alloys, the surface corrosion processes, porosity and microstructure in alloys and stir welds, the effects of thermal treatments on metals, and how ALBA synchrotron techniques can help to understand and solve those important industrial issues. These techniques can enhance several processes related to metallurgy and thus promote a significant impact on companies' economy and social image.
The event finished with a visit to the experimental hall and beamlines and with a networking lunch in tents outside ALBA building where all attendees could have relaxed talks with the scientists and other companies. According to the comments realized by the attendees the workshop was very interesting and they were satisfied with the talks and the visit to the facilities and look forward to benefit from ALBA techniques.
This seminar has been the 6th industrial seminar organized by the ALBA Industrial Liaison Office. Previous editions were devoted to Pharma and Cosmetics (2017), Agri-food and packaging (2017), Cements, pigments, ceramics and glasses (2016), pharmaceutical sector (2015) and the chemical industry (2014).
