A new school year begins, and with it, the 8th edition of the ALBA Mission. Registration for the 2025–2026 academic year is open from September 8 to October 13. As every year, the project — organised by the ALBA Synchrotron and aimed at 5th and 6th-grade students — offers schools the opportunity to take part in two scientific challenges: Make the invisible visible or Discover the power of light. The first challenge includes experiments related to matter, force, energy, and light, while the second focuses on the properties of light. Both challenges are led by members of the Synchrotron’s scientific and technical team and present a puzzle to be solved by student teams. To answer the questions, students turn their classroom into a laboratory and carry out a series of experiments, following the scientific method across four stages.

Through experiments proposed by ALBA staff on the virtual platform, students will immerse themselves in the world of research and explore science related to the Synchrotron. They’ll also get the chance to discover our research centre and meet some of its members up close. In November and May — at the beginning and end of the project — live virtual sessions will be offered, where students can meet and ask questions to ALBA staff.

Additionally, at the end of each laboratory stage, there will be a celebration and a prize draw: more video calls with ALBA staff or official project merchandise.

Participation is completely free and the contents included, available at several languages, have been specifically designed to work in a practical, meaningful and experiential way in the area of knowledge of the environment and fit with the curriculum from this stage and with the work by learning situations.
