On 6th May 2025, the ALBA Synchrotron had the honour of welcoming António Costa, President of the European Council. His visit underscored the vital role that large research infrastructures like ALBA play in advancing European scientific excellence, fostering collaboration, and boosting global competitiveness.

President Costa was warmly received by the ALBA management team, including the Director Caterina Biscari, and by Núria Montserrat, Consellera de Recerca i Universitats and Javier Selva, Director General of Knowledge Transfer of the Generalitat de Catalunya. Together, they explored the facility and engaged in discussions about ALBA's operations and its future plans.

During the tour, President Costa had the opportunity to speak directly with researchers performing experiments onsite—ranging from studies on sodium batteries and liver disease to the development of advanced magnetic functional materials. These interactions showcased the high-quality scientific support that ALBA offers to its diverse user community.

The visit also highlighted ALBA's active involvement in European initiatives, including its participation in the LEAPS (League of European Accelerator-based Photon Sources) network and various EU-funded research projects. These efforts emphasize the institution’s strong focus on talent development and knowledge sharing across borders.

President Costa's visit marked a meaningful endorsement of ALBA's mission and achievements. It reaffirmed our shared commitment to strengthening European cooperation in research and innovation, with ALBA continuing to serve as a key contributor to a more integrated and competitive scientific landscape in Europe.
