As part of the work package 'Ciencia Viva' devoted to outreach within the Planes Complementarios project, the directors of ALBA, IBEC, IFAE and ICFO reflect on current frontier research and present their most transformative projects in a session at the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB) that will open with the screening of Superradiance, an audiovisual proposal by artists Memo Akten and Katie Peyton Hofstadter.
The research system of Catalonia leads many of the most cutting-edge research projects in science and technology in Spain. The ALBA Synchrotron is launching a unique facility in Spain that will allow the development of advanced materials for the energy transition. The Institute of Photonics Sciences (ICFO), pioneer in the field of quantum communications, is promoting the implementation of the first steps of the European Quantum Internet. The Institute of Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) is designing diagnostic devices, nanopharmaceuticals and other emerging therapies for more personalized medicine. And the Institute of High Energy Physics (IFAE) is developing cutting-edge technologies that will allow for a deeper study of the universe and its components.
In this round table, which will inaugurate the "Radical Science" program, Lluís Torner (founding director of ICFO), Caterina Biscari (director of the ALBA Synchrotron), Josep Samitier (director of IBEC) and Eugenio Coccia (director of IFAE) will present the most strategic programs of current frontier research and reflect on the impact they have on knowledge and society. The debate will be presented by Judit Carrera, director of the CCCB, and Joan Gómez Pallarès, general director of Research at the Department of Research and Universities of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
The event will open with the screening of Superradiance, an audiovisual proposal by Memo Akten and Katie Peyton Hofstadter that integrates artificial intelligence, dance and neuroscience in a journey that challenges our capacity to understand and feel.
