ALBA Synchrotron
ALBA has been granted with ERDF funds for improving the data parallel processing capabilities of the high-performance server cluster giving service to ALBA beamline users, both in standard (based on CPUs) and graphical (GPUs) capabilities.
Cerdanyola del Vallès, 13th December 13 2018.
The equipment will be used to exploit the scientific use of MISTRAL and XALOC beamlines, which generate massive data and require complex processing. This development will allow to improve the online processing capabilities, so that scientific users can make the right decisions during the experiment and the offline remote processing, once the experiment is over, allows for achieving high quality scientific results.
The project combines a hardware investment (processing capacity) with critical software licenses (tools for high quality processing) and configures an essential starting point to deal with an increasing challenge, linked to new BLs presently at the design phase which will require additional efforts in this same direction in the near future (FAXTOR, devoted to hard X-ray tomography and XAIRA, devoted to macromolecular crystallography with a microbeam).
The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) cofunds 50% of the cost of the project (220.000 €) that will be finished by end of 2019.
