This science educational project has already reached more than 70,000 students from all over Spain since 2018. The programme, promoted by the ALBA Synchrotron and aimed at 5th and 6th grade primary school students, offers participants the chance to take part in two scientific challenges and to learn about a pioneering research centre in Europe such as the Synchrotron.

This is the seventh year that primary school teachers and students from all over Spain can participate in ALBA Mission, the educational project of ALBA to bring science closer to kids.

The project offers two scientific challenges: Make the invisible visible and The power of light. The first one proposes experiments about matter, force, energy and light, and the second focuses on the properties of light. Both challenges are led by scientific and technical staff of ALBA and pose an unknown to be resolved by the class teams. To solve the question, kids turn the classroom into a laboratory and carry out a series of experiments. It is proposed that they investigate and follow the scientific method to respond to the challenges along four stages. And, at the end of each stage, a draw for different prizes is held.

In December and May, as complements to the mission, a virtual visit to ALBA and a live YouTube streaming are held where students can meet some of the ALBA members who have guided them through the challenges and ask them questions.

Participation in ALBA Mission is completely free and, to remove geographical barriers among schools, its contents (materials and audiovisuals) are available at misionalba.es. Moreover, they are available in several languages and have been specifically designed to work in a practical, meaningful and experiential way in the area of environmental knowledge and fit perfectly with the curriculum and work based on learning situations.

In the last edition, more than 400 teachers of almost 300 schools participated in the ALBA Mission. Than means more than 650 classes with 14,100 students in total!

Teachers who want to register their class can do so through the registration page at the website until October 11. The new mission will begin on November 11.
